I gasped as the crackling flames consumed the letter I’d just written, along with those from all the other campers.

Even more terrifying: the grins that returned to the counselors’ faces as they gleefully watched the letters burn. Laurel looked diabolical as the firelight danced in her eyes.

Something was very wrong here.

Heather cleared her throat. “Even if we keep them from writing home about it, how are we supposed to stop them from talking amongst themselves?” she asked. “When I snoop around the bunks at night, I hear whispers. Girls asking about the wolves, asking where Rachel went.”

Laurel stared pensively into the flames. Then she shrugged. “Let them,” she said finally. “In just one night’s time, the Blood Howl Moon will rise. In just one night’s time, it won’t matter.”

“I’m just so hungry,” Heather complained, her voice whiny. “Can’t we snack on a few of the campers tonight?”

“And risk scaring the rest of our prey away?” Laurel snapped. “You can wait another twenty-four hours like the rest of us.” She rubbed her hands together. “Then we will feast on an all-you-can-eat buffet.”

My blood ran cold. Laurel’s final words made me shudder with such force that I lost my balance in the bush where I was hiding. I caught myself before I could topple over completely—but I stepped on a dry twig in the process.

It snapped loudly beneath my feet.

I ducked down and clamped a hand over my mouth. Through the bush, I could see Laurel’s head twist in my direction. I held my breath, terrified to make so much as a whisper.

Laurel squinted suspiciously. For a tense moment, I thought her eyes zeroed in on my own.

I let out a relieved breath as she turned back to the fire. She must not have seen me in the shadows.

“Come,” Laurel beckoned the others. “We should prepare for tonight’s campfire, then get some rest. Tomorrow is going to be very special.”

I watched as the three of them strutted off toward the main camp. I held my breath until they disappeared out of sight.

In that moment, I accepted my terrifying new reality:

There wasn’t just one werewolf loose in the bayou.

There were three of them.

And they were running Camp Moonglow.
